Why are all of the elders in this book so fucking cool?
Because they have a secret.... and if you haven't read this yet, you should!
Legend has it that it all started when Tess Gerritsen’s husband, a doctor, kept asking patients at his new practice what they did for a living.
And they hedged.
Or offered boring vaguaries that he later realized meant nothing at all.
Or, eventually, outright said it: I can’t tell you. They didn’t make the joke, but apparently they could have, because they were all veterans of a sort—the secret sort, the CIA and etc sort. But also, they were all people who could be easily written off as ordinary elders, settled and quiet and peaceful in their community and who asks a grey much about what they used to do because they’re not gonna be interesting, right? I mean, the Olds. Come on. Okay, Boomer.
HAHAHAHAHA, thought Tess Gerritsen (I’m putting words in her mouth here, but I feel like I can hear the cackle, because Tess G., like me, is no Young herself.) What if for my doctor husband, I sub in a small town sheriff, and what if all these retirees snuggled themselves down in a small town in Maine in peace.
Until….
I mean, you know how that sentence ends, right? But what I’m here to tell you is that THIS is the paperback for your bag on your next trip. You know how last week’s book was one that was smart and fun and also pretty dang low stress—like, you WANT to know what will happen but you also know it’s all gonna be okay?
The Spy Coast is not that book.
I mean, so not that book. But I enjoyed it deeply, even when I had to stop reading it at bedtime because clearly SOMETHING BAD WAS ABOUT TO HAPPEN (I was able to resume once it actually finally did, this is a me problem, I know it) , and if you have not already discovered this new series (just bought Book Two), but maybe have enjoyed yourself some of the sneaky cool older folks kicking ass genre (think Richard Osman, Deanna Raybourn—I mean, I’m saying that but I honestly haven’t read those yet but I do think this is the vibe), then yeah. Try this. It’s killer. And then tell me what you think.
Also—Richard Osman, Deanna Raybourn, should I go in? thoughts?
I can hardly believe you haven't read the Thursday Murder Club books! They are FANTASTIC. Killers of a Certain Age is also marvelous. I haven't picked up the sequel yet but thank you for the reminder! I'll bump the Tess Gerritsen series up a little higher on my never-ending TBR. :)
Book two is even better you are going to love it so much!
