Thanks for sharing your observations about Gilbert's latest exploration of addiction. I thought my failure to get into it was me. There is a guilty, relieved pleasure in thinking, Maybe it's her.

I don’t think anyone, even if they got into it, would say that if it’s not for you you’re the problem. It’s at a minimum a hell of a ride!

OMG the reviews of Gilbert's latest have been works of art on their own. Read Jia Tolentino in the New Yorker and Elisabeth Egan in the NY Times: "Metaphors abound, many of them cloaked in the goopy recovery language favored by Gilbert in her current incarnation." https://www.nytimes.com/2025/09/08/books/review/all-the-way-to-the-river-elizabeth-gilbert.html?unlocked_article_code=1.pE8.Xe7N.LmhdgL6gvNnq&smid=url-share

I so appreciated your comments on Liz Gilbert, she has become unreadable for me as well.

I just downloaded The Correspondent so I'm not sure what it compares to. I did recently enjoy another Ann Patchett recommendation, So Far Gone by Jess Walter.

I just read a recommendation (but have not read) for a 1926 novel titled Lolly Willowes by Sylvia Townsend Warner, "in which Lolly subverts all societal norms and moves to the countryside to become a witch." And, it's available on Kindle, who would have guessed.

Everything else I'm reading or have read lately is from at least several years ago if not more so you've probably read it already.

KJ- you loved The Correspondent (me, too!), so I think you’ll also love this— Theo of Golden, self-pub’d by Allen Levi, but with 22k reviews on Goodreads! It is peaceful, calm, sweet, with great characters and even better secrets. I was a reluctant reader, but so happy I did. What a lovely escape from the world!!
