Because of this article, I started Welcome to Glorious Tuga today, and I am in love. I also wrote about it on my Substack and mentioned you. THANK YOU@
The best thing about reading Welcome to Glorious Tuga now is that it is the first in a trilogy, and the second book comes out this summer. I listened to the audiobook, and it was excellent.
My best trick for sleep in recent years has been to listen to audiobooks that I only listen to before bed, so my brain starts to associate those voices with sleep. I started with Gerald Durrell's My Family and Other Animals, which I listened to basically five minutes at a time for years, but finally I couldn't do it anymore. Now, it's more often one of the Swallows and Amazons series of children's books, all beautifully narrated by Alison Larkin. Bonus--there are 12 of them! (Mostly) Low stakes, familiar stories. I set the sleep timer for 30 minutes, and generally I'm asleep within 5 minutes, 10 at the most. If I wake up in the middle of the night or earlier than I want to be awake, I just turn it back on, and back to sleep I go.
All of that said, I probably should still read more before bed!
Oh I ADORE Swallows and Amazons--there's no way those would put me to sleep (and We Didn't Mean to Go to Sea" is not low stakes :)) That works for my friend Jess, too. I've resisted doing anything with airpods (I share my bed with someone), in part bc I sleep on my side and find them uncomfortable. But once in a while I do a "sleep story" on Headspace (turns out I'm actually capable of getting interested in the wanderings of a nocturnal cat, so... not a big success!
I did try to see if I could go to sleep to We Didn't Mean to Go to Sea and had to stop once they were in the North Sea in the fog b/c it was too stressful, even though I knew what happened! However, Swallows and Amazons, Winter Holiday and Coot Club in particular have all worked beautifully. But if the wanderings of a nocturnal cat keep you awake, I can see why S and A might not be the best solution!
I've been really firm with myself about not letting my phone sit on my bedside table - too tempting!!! It's helped me read physical books and go to sleep, and it's been hugely beneficial as I wake up and can't reach for it...

I love that so much! It's so lovely. There's another coming and I cannot wait.
I will forever be grateful for your recommendation. I loved the book and can’t wait for the next.

Honored to be among your fashion peeps! Next time I nod off mid day I am going to re-think it as -- headed to toss/turn yoga XX
I have to be VERY FIRM with myself on nights when you have a new post!
🥰 😘

I don't reach for it once I've put it down.. it's the putting it down that's my issue! I'm still a phone-as-alarm person.
Always my fav substack to receive! Thank you!!
I love hearing that!
