I decided from the blurb that MINISTRY OF TIME is not the book for me, so I'm totally okay if you just stop. As for something that might get you charged up ... have you read Kristin Chen's COUNTERFEIT?
I wanted to enjoy Ministry of Time so much more than I did. It was so smart and so interesting, but I was in a mood for something light and fun, and it wasn't that.
"Love, Lies, and Cherry Pie" is light and fun and, also, reasonably interesting; it's a fake-dating rom com with Bridget Jones vibes. It is not a debut, though.
I’m reading The Five Year Lie now and it’s amazing! I read thrillers and mysteries on the treadmill and because they’re so fast-paced I stay on there longer. One of my favorite thrillers I’ve read in the last few years is out June 11 and I think you’d like it - Do What Godmother Says by L.S. Stratton. It’s a dual timeline novel set partly during the Harlem Renaissance, about an artist with a shady patron (inspired by a real-life art patron) and a modern-day woman who’s gifted one of the artist’s paintings and finds herself in danger because of it.
Hiya KJ, oh, do I hear you. My slumpity has gone on so long, I despair of finding a great fiction title and the only thing saving me is that I'm reading a ton of non-fiction now as research for my new novel.
Your post does make me wonder whether my forthcoming would break your slump of course :) It isn't your "genre" to the extent that that term means much. But it's about a woman who will get something done because past demons are fiercer drivers than better angels.
Thank you for this! I was about to use my latest Audible credit on the Ministry of Time, but now I'm wondering if I should wait until it's on Libby, and try one of the others instead. Finlay Donovan has been on my list for awhile!
I’ve been in a reading (and listening slump too). Just decided to DNF Village Weavers by Myriam J. A. Chancy. It was just slow and I felt nothing was happening, and now that you mentioned protagonist letting things happen rather than doing things - that’s exactly it.
I recently finished a great YA, Nettle and Bone by T Kingfisher, so I went back to YA and have started Tess of the Road by Rachel Hartman. So far so good. I’m annoyed at the protagonist, but mostly because she’s making bad choices.
I also started listening to Good Company by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney. I didn’t read anything about it before picking it but recognized Marin Ireland’s voice immediately. I loved her narration for Remarkably Bright Creatures. So far, I like it.
I’m a children’s librarian and my stack is always bigger than one person could ever read.
I think you just convinced me to NOT put this on my TBR list. Yellowface was a fantastic book! I just finished The Villa by Rachel Hawkins - in like 48 hours. It was a fast paced gothic suspense story with a few twists at the end.
I adore Dog of the North! I think Butcher & Blackbird and Clover Hendry's Day Off would
both fit your requirements in very different ways :)

Yes! The Five Year Lie is a fantastic book! I was hooked and couldn't put it down!
By the way ... I LOVED Chicken Sisters!
