Yeah yeah yeah, Counterfeit by Kirstin Chen has been around for a while (2022) but that’s good! It means you can get it at the library, or grab a paperback, and settle in for a totally reliably fun read. It’s all designer bags and counterfeit schemes and complicated relationships, immigrants and ex-pats and why we do what we do, buy what we buy, are who we are, fake what we fake…
And the trouble is I can’t tell you much more bc this is a book rich in spoiler possibilities. But I can tell you I zipped through it, and every time I kind of went, huh, wait a minute…
Something turned or twisted.
If you’ve read it, tell me what you thought in the comments and we’ll discuss—and if you have not, DO NOT READ THE COMMENTS bc that’s where we’ll put the spoilers.
I note that back in the day, when I was a kid fiercely reading my way through the library, I gave not one whit for how old a book was. In fact sometimes I felt like old books were the best! My biggest concern was reading a series in order and other than that… if it looked good I added it to the stack.
How much do you fall for the “but I must read the newest thing” schtick? I do, some—I want to be in the conversation, after all—but I’m also getting a lot of fun out of finding the things I’d been meaning to read and never got around to and rolling with those.
What’s the best “missed it at the time” book you’ve read lately?
#Amreading: The Bullet That Missed, Richard Osman
#Amwaitingfor (Barnes and Noble does NOT ship pre-orders to arrive on pub day which is sad…): Everyone Is Lying to You, Jo Piazza
I am reading THE ROAD TO WELLVILLE after it was mentioned in passing in the non-fiction book HOW TO BE WELL by Amy Larocca (also very good). I'd never read TC Boyle before and I am absolutely *loving* THE ROAD TO WELLVILLE. Funny like A CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES.
I’m not reading the comments because I’m going to read this!!!
Right now I’m reading The Page Turner, my first Viola Shipman novel. It’s okay, not blowing my mind.
Also, The Spy Coast by Tess Gerritson. This is an older book and the first in a series. Think retired CIA agents solving crimes. I’m enjoying it.
And lastly, The Correspondent by Virginia Evans. It’s brand new, but WOW!
